Today is April 23, 2012 – the day that is recognized as William Shakespeare’s birthday. Shakespeare’s actual birth date is unknown, but he was baptized April 26, 1564. Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616 at the age of 52.
William Shakespeare is my favourite playwright. He was born in Stratford-Upon-Avon in England. I have waited eagerly my entire life to travel around Great Britain and Western Europe. I definitely plan on visiting Stratford-Upon-Avon, the town that my favourite city, Stratford, Ontario, was named after. I also hope to see a Shakespearean play at Shakespeare’s theatre, the Globe Theatre in London, England.
My favourite Shakespearean tragedies are Hamlet, and Romeo And Juliet. My mother Susan has been an English teacher for 40 years. She claims to have Hamlet practically memorized! Back in high school, I attended performances of Macbeth and Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. My mother ended up being my Grade Twelve English teacher! We studied Hamlet in Grade Twelve. In 2008, my Mom and I attended another performance of Hamlet, with Ben Carlson in the title role. He was the best Hamlet ever!
My favourite Shakespearean comedy is Twelfth Night, which I saw performed four times last season at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. The music in Twelfth Night was brilliant. The play become more like “Twelfth Night-The Musical!” Stratford Festival actually produced a movie version of Twelfth Night, as one of the performances was recorded. The film played at movie theatres two times recently, but unfortunately I missed it. Last year, I also attended two performances of The Merry Wives of Windsor – another excellent Shakespearean comedy. Several years ago, Mom and I saw As You Like It at Stratford Festival.
I have a ticket to see Much Ado About Nothing at the end of July. I haven’t read Much Ado and I hope to read it before I go to the play!
For the love of Shakespeare and the Stratford Shakespeare Festival,
P.S. Happy 60th Anniversary to the Stratford Shakespeare Festival!
